The Isle of Skye isn’t quite the most westerly landmass in Europe as the Outer Hebrides or maybe Ireland (depending on what map you consult) enjoys that title, but it’s definitely on the westernmost edge and feels very much like it’s teetering rimward most days.
Today is a wet day. The rain sweeps in off the Atlantic in leaden sheets and drenches everything in its path.
Quite a few people online tend to romanticise Skye, so in the interests of honesty, let’s just admit that it’s more often wet than not. Those stunning views are often wrapped in a grey blanket of cloud and mist - it’s not called the Misty Isle for nothing.
Our Croft is a working smallholding. It’s also an active building site, so there are piles of old pallets, bags of compost, old fishboxes, building materials, stone slabs for the terrace we’ve yet to build and many other very unphotogenic things strewn everywhere.
One day it will be beautiful. It’s just sadly still very much a work in progress.
As it’s so dreich today I thought I’d take a few drizzly photos that might act as the BEFORE in one of those “before and after” comparisons, and that I’d post up an AFTER in another six months time to see how far we’ve come.
I am envying you the rain today. It's been dry here in the east for weeks, and young plants are suffering.
I feel like this is getting a bit repetitive… We are ALSO expecting rain today although it hasn’t started yet. But after a sunny weekend filled with garden work, I’m actually not sad about it because it means we don’t have to water the seeds this afternoon. And as I look up the sky is getting brighter so we may not be getting that rain after all. But then again, with climate change that’s not surprising… Have a great week!
